The New Normal: Senior Executives Discuss the Economic Outlook of the A/E/C
Date: Wednesday, October 14
THIS is a recovery? Over the last 18 months, we have all been painfully aware of our changing economic conditions. SMPS/LA is bringing back the same panel of senior executives that spoke to our audience in March 2008 at which time the discussion centered on what to do in uncertain economic times to "weather the storm." Collectively, we all knew that a slowdown was coming, but we did not know what it would look like or how dramatically it would affect our industry and firms. Since then, we have all made adjustments and changed the way we do business to respond to the changed marketplace. As we all know, A LOT has changed since that time. Then we heard the recent good news:
"From a technical standpoint, the recession is very likely over at this point."
- Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, September 15, 2009
So we are left to ask ourselves "Is this the new normal?" While economic indicators are trending up, for many it doesn't feel like it is over. Unemployment continues to spike, the second round of foreclosures are in the offing, construction starts are down and project financing is scarce. With that in mind, the panel is going to revisit former predictions and project how the industry will change and what they see happening next based on current trend lines. The panel will answer:
- What has changed and what has stayed the same?
- What has been the biggest surprise of this cycle?
- What are the opportunities this cycle has presented?
- What will become the "new normal"?
- Where do we go from here?
